Mr. Yogeshwar Varma was born on 20th September 1955. He is a senior career diplomat. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1980 and has served in many postings both in India and abroad. He served as Third Secretary in Embassy of India, Tokyo from October 1982 to June 1984; as Second Secretary in Embassy of India, Rangoon from July 1984 to December 1985; and as Second Secretary and later First Secretary in Embassy of India in Caracas from January 1986 to February 1989. He was Deputy Chief of Protocol and later Deputy Secretary in Ministry of External Affairs at New Delhi from March 1989 to April 1992. After serving in Embassy of India in Bangkok as First Secretary from June 1992 to June 1993, he served as Deputy Secretary and later Director in Ministry of External Affairs at New Delhi from July 1993 to February 1997. His other assignments include Deputy High Commissioner in Male, Maldives from February 1997 to July 2000; Consul General in Osaka-Kobe, Japan from August 2000 to July 2003; Consul General in Sao Paulo, Brazil from August 2003 to July 2006; and Ambassador of India to Mongolia from October 2006 to October 2009. He was Deputy Director General at Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), within Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi since March 2010 till July 2011.
He can speak Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese languages besides English.
Mr. Yogeshwar Varma has done his Bachelors in Science and holds a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree in Mechanical Engineering from UK. He also has a graduate Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering. He is married to Mrs. Alka Varma and has two children.
