Historical Background
The Isthmus of Panama was discovered
in 1501 by Rodrigo de Bastidas, one of the Captains
who accompanied Columbus on his second voyage to America.
Since then, Panama remained a centre of Spanish exploration
and expansion in Central and South America. During the
rebellion of the Spanish colonies, Panama associated
itself with Colombia and remained a part of Colombia
till 1903 when the present Republic was established.
