Higher And Technical Education

There are 196 Universities, 81 Deemed Universities, 5 Institutions and 10 open universities imparting distance learning established through State and Central legislation and 11 Institutes of National Importance established through Central legislation in India. There are nearly 13,150 affiliated Colleges, including 1,600 Women’s Colleges (12.7%), in addition to the unrecognized institutions operating in the higher education sector. At the beginning of the year 2002-03, the total number of students enrolled in the formal system of education was 8.821 million. The strength of teaching faculty is about 0.5 million. Its technological advancement in the areas of space technology, production and launch of indigenous satellites and development of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, besides information technology, has made it the most favoured destination for countries, particularly the developing ones, looking for training and guidance. Internationally recognised and cost-effective Education of top quality in India attracts nearly 10,000 students from all over the world every year. Indian Universities have also set up campuses abroad. University of Delhi has collaborative arrangements with 35 Universities through-out the world for students and faculty exchange, besides running cultural immersion and language programmes.
