Mr. Ashok Tomar was born on 30th August, 1954. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1978 and has served in many postings both in India and abroad. He served as Third and later Second Secretary in Embassy of India, Lisbon from 1980 to 1982 and First Secretary in the Political Wing in the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal from 1988 to 1991. He has also served at the Embassy of India in Paris, France as First Secretary and later Counsellor dealing with Press, Information and Culture from 1991 to 1994. His other assignments have included a three-year assignment as Minister in Embassy of India, Yangon, Myanmar from 1999 to 2002 and as Deputy Consul General at the Consulate General of India in New York, USA from 2002-2005.

Mr. Tomar has extensive work experience in the Ministry of External Affairs in India and has worked in the NAM/CHOGM, and Administration Divisions of the Ministry. He has worked as Director in charge of Africa Region. He has also worked on deputation in the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, New Delhi. The Rajya Sabha is the Upper House of the Indian Parliament. Mr. Tomar’s work experience also includes working as the Deputy Director General of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, New Delhi in 1997-99.

Mr. Tomar has a Post Graduate Degree in Economics from DelhiUniversity and is married to Mukta Tomar, who is also a career Foreign Service Officer. They have two daughters.
